Before starting to crochet the Cozy Winter crochet hat let’s learn how to crochet the herringbone half double crochet stitch:
The video tutorial for the stitch:
The written pattern for the herringbone half double crochet stitch:

- Crochet a herringbone half double crochet stitch starting with 3rd chain from the hook: yarn over, insert hook in 3rd chain, yarn over and pull the yarn through the chain and first loop on the hook; yarn over and draw the yarn through both loops on hook- this is the first stitch.

- Repeat step 3 to the end of the row.

The chart for the Cozy Winter crochet hat:
The written pattern for the Cozy Winter crochet hat:
Leave a long tail and make 27 chains.
Row 1: in the 3rd chain from the hook crochet a half double crochet, continue to crochet 1 herringbone half double crochet in every next 21 chains; in the last 3 chains make 1 single crochet in every chain.
Row 2: ch 1 (don’t count as a stitch), 1 single crochet in every next 3 stitches. Continue to crochet 1 herringbone half double crochet in every next 21 chains; 1 half double crochet in the last stitch.
Row 3: ch 2 (don’t count as a stitch), 1 half double crochet in next stitch. Crochet 1 herringbone half double crochet in every next 21 stitches; crochet 1 single crochet in every next 3 stitches.
Repeat the pattern from row 2 until you have 49 rows.
After you finish the last row, don’t cut the yarn and join together the 2 edges. I’ve joined the edges crocheting single crochet through both edges. Then continue to crochet the cuff directly on the hat.
I’ve crocheted the cuff with half double crochet in the back loop, a reversible stitch because it will look good when you fold it. In addition to being a design element, the cuff adds extra warmth.
The cuff:
Crochet 8 chains.
Row 1: hdc in the 2nd chain from the hook, crochet hdc in every chain until the end of the row. You should have 7 half-double crochet stitches.
Row 2: ch1, *hdc in back loop in next stitch*, repeat *-* until the end of the row.
Repeat row 2 around the hat until you reach the first edge and join together the 2 edges.
For the top of the hat use the long tail stitch a running stitch all the way around and pull to close the hole.
Tie off and weave in all your ends!
Leave the hat as is or add a trendy, faux-fur pom-pom! You can also make your pom-pom. I think a big, giant pom-pom would look super cute on this hat.
