Hello my knitters, today I will show you the most common decreases technique in knitting, how to do it and how to read it in a chart pattern/ diagram.
Knit two together (k2tog) is the easiest and most common decrease in knitting. Insert the right needle into next two stitches on the left needle knitwise so that you are inserting the needle in the second and then the first stitch, as if they are one stitch and knit as usual (knit two stitches together in the front loops), the decrease leans to the right.
Knit two together through the back is a common substitute for the slip, knit, pass over (SKP) technique. Insert the right needle into the next two stitches on the left needle, purlwise on the back side of the stitch so that you are inserting the needle into the first stitch and then the second stitch as if they are one stitch and knit as usual (knit two stitches together in the back loops), the decrease leans to the left.
Decreases Slip, Knit, Pass Over (SKP): insert the right needle into the first stitch on the left needle and slide it off of the needle. Knit the next stitch, pass the slipped stitch over the knitted stitch and off the right needle, the decrease leans to the left. This method gives the exact result as SSK.
Decreases Slip, slip, knit- SSK (SSK on right side SSP on wrong side): slip two stitches knitwise and knit them together through back loops, the decrease leans to the left.
Decreases Slip, slip, Purl- SSP (SSP on right side SSK on wrong side): slip two stitches knitwise, return them to left needle and purl them together through back loops, the decrease leans to the left.
Decreases knit three together centred decrease: this decrease makes three stitches onto one with the middle stitch centered over the two decreased stitches.
Insert the right needle into the next two stitches on the left needle knitwise as one and slide them off the left needle, knit the next stitch and pass the two slipped stitch over the knitted stitch and off the right needle. The two slipped stitches can be passed over the knitted stitch together in one motion, or one at a time. The finished stitch will be centred over the two decreased stitches.
