I know there’s something deeply comforting about simple, handmade crochet dishcloths, especially those with beautiful textures like the star stitch. These small, practical pieces bring warmth and intention to everyday routines, transforming dishwashing into a more mindful and enjoyable ritual. If you love quick and satisfying projects, you might also enjoy exploring other easy crochet dishcloth patterns on the blog. A crocheted dishcloth made from soft cotton yarn is a real lifesaver in the kitchen, and it’ll bring your home that extra touch of charm and love that you’ve been looking for. Each Star Stitch dishcloth pattern is more than just a dishcloth — it’s a friend that helps make even the most ordinary tasks feel a little more special.
One of the best things about The Star Stitch dishcloths is that they’re good for the environment. I would love for you to consider using reusable crochet dishcloths instead of disposable sponges or wipes, it’s such a simple switch, but it makes a big difference, would be a great way to reduce waste and support an eco-friendly lifestyle. Cotton crochet dishcloths are highly absorbent, durable, and gentle, making them perfect for everyday use. They soften beautifully over time while staying reliable. For the best results, I always recommend using 100% cotton yarn for dishcloths as it’s easy to clean and holds up well after repeated use. While there are other fibers available, cotton remains the best choice for long-lasting crochet dishcloth patterns.
The star stitch dishcloth pattern is perfect for both beginners looking to try something new and experienced crocheters who enjoy relaxing, repetitive stitches.
The texture created by the star stitch not only looks beautiful but also adds gentle scrubbing power, making it ideal for washing dishes. If you’re into slow living, want to reduce waste, or just love making practical handmade items, the Star Stitch dishcloth is the perfect project for you. It combines beauty, texture, and purpose in a simple form — one stitch at a time.
I’ve found that the crocheted star stitch dishcloth is especially great for washing dishes. It holds water well, lasts longer than many alternatives, and supports a more eco-friendly kitchen routine. And honestly, it’s also the perfect excuse to grow your yarn stash — because you can never have too many dishcloths, whether for yourself or as thoughtful handmade gifts.
For my Star stitch dishcloth, I’ve used 50 g 100% cotton yarn Antique pink and a 3 mm hook.
This is a very high-quality cotton yarn. This yarn is made from 100% combed Turkish cotton, which is soft, flexible, and exceptionally durable. You’ll love how well Turkish cotton textiles hold up over time — they just get softer with use. This yarn is also great at soaking up moisture, and it dries really quickly. The color chart includes a beautiful range of colors, so it’s easy to find the perfect shade for you. You’re going to love this YARN.

The written instructions:
Start with 70 chains.
1.Row 1: make 1 loop in the 2nd chain from the hook and continue to make 1 loop in every next 4 chains (you should have 6 loops on your hook), yarn over and pull the yarn through the all 6 loops (now you should have 1 loop on your hook), ch1. This was the first star stitch.
* Make 1 loop through the eye formed by the ch, a loop through the back of the last loop of the previous star, the 3rd loop in the same ch as the last loop of the previous start st and 1 loop in every next 2 chains (now you should have 6 loops on your hook); yarn over and pull the yarn through the all 6 loops (now you should have 1 loop on your hook), ch1*.
Repeat *-* to the end of the row and make 1 hdc in the chain that you’ve made the last loop of the last star stitch. You should have 33 star stitches.
2. Row 2: ch1, *skip the next stitch and make 2 hdc in the next st*. Repeat to the end of the row, sl. st in the chain that you’ve started to make the star stitch. You should have 66 hdc sts.
3. Row 3: ch 3, make 1 loop in the 2nd chain from the hook and 1 loop the next chain, continue to make 1 loop in every next 3 stitches (you should have 6 loops on your hook), yarn over and pull the yarn through the all 6 loops (now you should have 1 loop on your hook), ch1. This was the first star stitch.
* Make 1 loop through the eye formed by the ch, a loop through the back of the last loop of the previous star, the 3rd loop in the same ch as the last loop of the previous start st and 1 loop in every next 2 stitches (now you should have 6 loops on your hook); yarn over and pull the yarn through the all 6 loops (now you should have 1 loop on your hook), ch1*.
Repeat *-* to the end of the row and make 1 hdc in the chain that you’ve made the last loop of the last star stitch. You should have 33 star stitches.
4. Row 4: ch1, *skip the next stitch and make 2 hdc in the next st*. Repeat to the end of the row, sl. st in the chain that you’ve started to make the star stitch. You should have 66 hdc sts.
Repeat rows 3-4 until you have the desire length. I’ve crocheted until I had 15 star stitch rows and 15 hdc st rows. Now continue to crochet the edge.
The edge:
Make the edge on the right side in rounds. To do this, crochet one round of single crochet stitches, followed by two rounds of herringbone half-double crochet stitches, and then finish with one round of single crochet stitches.
- Round 1: ch1, *crochet 1 sc in every next 6 stitches, next make 2 sc tog in the next 2 stitches*. Repeat *-* to the end of this side, 1 sc in every next last 2 stitches (for this side you should have 58 sts). Now start to crochet the second side: continue to crochet sc sts (crochet 1 sc for every hdc rows and 2 sc for every star stitch rows), for this side you should have 45 sc sts. Now continue to crochet the 3rd side (for this side you should have 58 sts) like you did for the first side. Now continue to crochet the last side of the dishcloth: crochet like you did for the second side ( you should have 45 sc sts).
- Round 2: ch 1, crochet herringbone half double crochet in every next stitch of the round.
- Round 3: ch 1, crochet herringbone half double crochet in every next stitch of the round. For the corners, crochet 2 herringbones half double crochet in each of the next 2 stitches of the corners. Slip stitch in the first stitch to close the round.
- Round 4: ch1, crochet 1sc st in every next st of the round. Slip stitch in the first stitch to close the round.
Tie off and weave in the ends.
If you’ve made this crochet dishcloth to sell or give as a gift, I recommend washing it by hand or in the washing machine at a maximum temperature of 40°C. I prefer 20°C for all my cotton items. Dry it flat, then iron it on the cotton setting. The dishcloth will smell and look better.
