Start with 2 chains.

Make the first chain larger to crochet the first 2 single crochet stitches more easily.

1. Row 1: single crochet in the 2nd chain from the hook, ch, single crochet in the same chain. You should have 2 stitches.

2. Row 2: ch 2 (count as a stitch), single crochet in the next ch space, ch, single crochet in the last stitch. You should have 3 stitches.

3. Row 3: ch (don’t count as a stitch), single crochet in the first stitch, ch, single crochet in the next ch space, ch, single crochet in the last ch space. You should have 3 stitches.

4. Row 4: ch 2 (count as a stitch), single crochet in the next ch space, ch, single crochet in next ch space, ch, single crochet in last st of the row. You should have 4 stitches.

5. Row 5: ch (don’t count as a stitch), single crochet in the first stitch; * ch, single crochet in next ch space*, repeat *-* until the end of the row. You should have 4 stitches.

6. Row 6: ch 2 (count as a stitch), *single crochet in next ch space, ch*; repeat *-* until the end of the row, and in the last stitch crochet single crochet stitch. You should have 5 stitches.

Repeat the pattern from row 5 until you reach the desired length. The scarf grows with one stitch every other row.

For this scarf, I didn’t crochet an edge. I wanted the Moss stitch crochet scarf to be very simple, and easy to crochet with a classic look.
